Genoa Coach Gian Piero Gasperini says that star striker Marco Boriello must go to Euro 2008 if he continues his amazing recent form.
Borriello hit a brilliant hat-trick, including a contender for goal of the season, in Genoa’s incredible 5-3 win at Udinese yesterday afternoon.
This treble took the frontman level with Juventus’ David Trezeguet, on 15 goals, as the top-scorer in Serie A this season.
“There are more than two months left of the season and if he continues like this it would be hard to leave him out,” said Gasperini.
Borriello received his maiden call-up for the Azzurri, as he appeared as a substitute in the 3-1 friendly win over Portugal earlier this month.
The 25-year-old was seen as a very promising player as a youngster, however his career was thought to be dead when he tested positive for drugs in December of 2006. He joined Genoa from Milan in a co-ownership deal at the start of the season, and he has finally burst into life.
“Signing Borriello was President Enrico Preziosi’s decision. He did well to secure the deal with Milan,” Gasperini explained.
“There were two options – one was Borriello and one was Daniele Cacia and then the latter went to Fiorentina.
“Will he return to Milan? To play at San Siro you need great psychological strength as well as the technical and he is still maturing, but he is on the right track.”
Italy boss Roberto Donadoni is still searching for a back-up for Luca Toni in the first striker position, and Borriello is certainly in with a shot of winning the race to take this role.
