Steven Beacom: Best and worst of Euro 2008

( belfasttelegraph.co.uk )

So that's another major championship over. Enjoyable tournament, wasn't it? Certainly more highs than lows. Here's my best and worst of the tournament.

Best match: Germany 3-2 Portugal. Also worthy mentions to Holland 4-1 France and Spain 4-1 Russia.

Worst match: Spain 0-0 Italy. Looking foward to this match for a few days, it turned out to be a shocking affair. Thank goodness for penalty shoot-outs. Also France 0-0 Romania was awful.

Best goal: Bastian Schweinsteiger (Germany v Portugal). Brilliant move, brilliant finish. It just edged out Wesley Sneijder's terrific effort for Holland against Italy. Sneijder's goal against France was also a beauty.

Best coach: Fatih Terim (Turkey). He told his players to never give up and inspired them to reach the semi-finals.

Worst coach: Raymond Domenech (France). He didn't have a clue.

Best player: For me the most influential was Spain's Marcos Senna.

Best substitute: Cesc Fabregas (Spain)

Worst ego: Cristiano Ronaldo. He thinks he's Pele, Maradona and Bestie rolled into one.

Best free-kick: Michael Ballack's stunning strike to give Germany victory over Austria.

Biggest flop: The French team. Woeful.

Best finish: When Turkey equalised in injury time of extra-time to earn a 1-1 draw with Croatia, who had just scored a minute before! The Turks then won on penalties.

Best comeback: Turkey 3-2 Czech Republic.

Biggest blunder: Petr Cech's howler in the above match.

Best commentator: Radio 5 Live's Alan Green. Leaves the TV boys in his wake. The storm in Vienna that led to a TV breakdown saved us from having to listen to John Motson in the Germany v Turkey semi-final and mercifully for a few minutes gave us Green instead.

Worst commentator: John Motson. Thank goodness this was his last major tournament.

Best summariser: If only John McEnroe had played football. Not too much to choose from here, Mark Lawrenson gets the nod for a few witty sarcastic lines. I hope I never have to hear David Pleat again.

Best studio based pundit: Eamon Dunphy on RTE is generally worth listening to, but he has now got to the stage where he is controversial just for the sake of it.

I have time for Martin O'Neill, but he was interrupted so much by the annoying Gary Lineker that he didn't get the chance to shine like normal.

So, and I am stunning myself here, I'm going for Gary Neville, yes Gary Neville, who did a fine job for ITV.

Team of the tournament (4-3-1-2): Iker Casillas (Spain), Sergio Ramos, Carlos Marchena, Josip Simunic (Croatia), Gio van Bronckhorst (Holland),Wesley Sneijder (Holland), Marcos Senna (Spain), Lukas Podolski (Germany), Xavi (Spain), David Villa (Spain), Roman Pavlyuchenko (Russia) Subs: Gianluigi Buffon (Italy), Cesc Fabregas (Spain), Michael Ballack (Germany), Andres Iniesta (Spain), Nihat Kahveci (Turkey).
