Eduardo da Silva broke his leg in Arsenal's Premier League game Saturday at Birmingham and is expected to miss the European Championships.
Eduardo, who plays for Croatia, was fouled by Blues defender Martin Taylor in the third minute. Taylor was immediately sent off in the game, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
The Brazilian-born striker lay on the field at St. Andrews for almost eight minutes receiving medical attention before being taken to a hospital.
Sky Sports televised the game live, and said it would not show a replay because it was too distressing.
"I think this guy should never play football again," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said of Taylor. "What is he doing on the football pitch? The season is over for (Eduardo) and the injury is very, very bad."
Eduardo scored four goals in 16 games this season. He scored 13 in 22 matches for Croatia, which qualified for European Championships in June.
Birmingham manager Alex McLeish defended Taylor.
"Martin's distraught about the lad's injury," McLeish said. "It's certainly not in Martin Taylor's makeup at all to commit a malicious tackle."
