Pavel Pogrebnyak still in doubt for Euro 2008 as Russia arrives at Austrian base

Russia striker Pavel Pogrebnyak may have to return to Germany for further treatment or scans on his injured knee, casting a shadow over the arrival of Guus Hiddink's team at the European Championship.

Pogrebnyak damaged the meniscus in his left knee shortly after scoring a long-range free kick in Russia's 2-1 defeat of Serbia last week, and is in doubt for Euro 2008.

His absence would be a major blow for Hiddink's preparations. Pogrebnyak was joint top scorer in this year's UEFA Cup with 10 goals as Zenit St. Petersburg won the title by beating Rangers in the final.

Pogrebnyak has already seen a specialist in Munich, Germany.

"He stays with the team," team spokesman Ilya Kazakov said Thursday. "Maybe later a doctor will take him to the Munich clinic."

Hiddink has said he has no plans to call up a replacement.

The Russian team arrived in this Austrian Alpine village late Wednesday night after beating Lithuania 4-1 in Germany in its last warm-up game.

Defender Alexei Berezutsky injured his face early in the match and had to be substituted because doctors could not immediately stop the bleeding, but he was expected to take part in Russia's first training session later Thursday.

Russia will have to do without playmaker Andrei Arshavin in its opening two matches after he was sent off against Andorra in the team's last qualifying match.

The Russians take on one of the tournament favorites, Spain, in their opening Group D match on Tuesday in Innsbruck. They then play defending champion Greece and Sweden.
