Riva: No Maradona Or Pele At Euro 2008

( goal.com )

Italy legend Gigi Riva is unimpressed by the quality of the modern footballer, and believes there will be no players at Euro 2008 who can rival past legends such as Diego Maradona and Pele.

Riva is one of the all-time greats of Italian football, and is La Nazionale’s record goalscorer with 35 goals from 42 appearances between 1965 and 1974.

The former Cagliari striker, who possessed a shot so hard that he once broke a spectator in the crowd’s arm with one of his trademark left foot drives, is not too enthusiastic about what he sees from those playing the game today.

"Who are the big stars at the Euros? There are many good players but I do not see a Pelè or a Maradona,” Riva told Il Giorno.

“The best players in Europe, for me, there are three and they are Cristiano Ronaldo, Kakà and Ibrahimovic.

“However they are not in the hall of fame because they still lack a little something.”

Italy have only won the European Championships once in their history, back in 1968, when they defeated Yugoslavia 2-0 in a final replay in Rome, with Riva scoring the opening goal of the game.
