Tranquillo Barnetta will miss the weekend warm-up match against Slovakia and sit out training sessions until Monday after damaging ligaments in his left ankle, the team said Wednesday.
The Bayer Leverkusen winger, who celebrates his 23rd birthday Thursday, has been the key creative spark for Switzerland this season, including scoring both goals in a 2-1 friendly win over the Netherlands in Geneva last August.
Steve von Bergen was scheduled to see doctors Wednesday to treat a broken bone in his hand. The 24-year-old defender from Hertha Berlin must also sit out the Slovakia match Saturday.
Switzerland coach Koebi Kuhn has already been forced to make two changes this week to his provisional roster of 26 players, losing backup goalkeeper Fabio Coltorti and striker Blaise Nkufo. Kuhn replaced the pair with international newcomers Eldin Jakupovic and Thomas Haeberli.
