England's failure to reach the Euro 2008 football finals is costing the jobs of hundreds of workers at JJB Sports.
The firm is shutting 72 of its 420 stores by the end of the month and axing 800 jobs as profits slumped 28 per cent to £33.8million last year.
The retailer calculates it lost £23m in replica kit sales after Steve McClaren - dubbed the wally with the brolly - failed to lead England to this summer's finals.
Jjb has been under intense competition from the likes of Mike Ashley's Sportsworld.
The cuts came just 24 hours after rival JD Sports - which is less dependent on replica kit sales - revealed it doubled profits to £35m last year.
