Italy of course are the reigning World Champions, but they face a tough task to add the European trophy to this, having been drawn in a group with France, Holland and Romania.
“It’s natural that we are amongst the favourites,” Toni explained ahead of tomorrow’s friendly match with Spain.
“This is a special season for me and one of my objectives is Euro 2008.
“But it will be a very difficult Group – for me it is the “Group of Death” – and then we will probably have to take on Spain.
“We will go to the European Championships with the same target as usual – to win. We are world champions and that gives us an even greater obligation to go for victory.”
The 30-year-old is having an absolutely stunning season, and is the current top-scorer in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich.
“I just want to be part of the squad and to do that I want to carry on playing well at Bayern Munich,” Toni said modestly.
“I don’t consider myself a world star and perhaps I arrived late in the world of calcio, but I have two trophies that can’t be attributed to fortune – the Golden Boot in 2006 with 31 Serie A goals and the World Cup where I played and scored.”
Toni is expected to lean the line tomorrow night in Spain, accompanied by Antonio Di Natale and Mauro Camoranesi.
