Basel is Switzerland's third most populous city (166,563 inhabitants (2004); 690,000 inhabitants in the conurbationand Switzerland's second-largest urban area as of 2003). Located in north-west Switzerland on the river Rhine, Basel functions as a major industrial centre for the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. The city borders both Germany and France. RestaurantsStucki, Bruderholzallee 42 (061/361 82 22). One of the best restaurants in Switzerland, winner of two Michelin stars for his classical style and originality. Menus from 50 francs, if you place the reservation doing quite early. Closed Sunday and Monday.
Au Violon, Im Lohnhof 4 (061/269 87 11). Gourment food in an atmosphere cogedor, a renovated building near Leonhardskirche offers specialties depending on the season. Menus from 20 francs. Closed Sunday and Monday.
Wilhelm Tell, Spalenvorstadt 38. Calm, food from 15 Swiss francs. Closed Sunday.
Zum Goldenen Fass, Hammerstrasse 108 (061/693 11 11). The quality formal, informal atmosphere in the residential area of Kleinbasel, Excellent, and high quality, all organic food, with light lunch menus from 20 francs, which at night are doubled.
Country Life, Sattelgasse 3. Small restaurant vegetables and meats in Marktplatz, with menus from 17 francs.
Coffee and club
Fumare non fumare, Gerbergasse 38. Cool, delineated expressly bar, in a corner, and with its own beer. Climate for smokers and one for non (hence its name). Opens late.
Pfalz, Münsterberg 11. Small, with excellent juice, sandwiches and salads menu. Closed Saturday and Sunday.
Zum Isaak, Münsterplatz 16. Quiet place for lovers of tea and coffee. Snacks and meals varied. It has terrace. Closed on Mondays.

Atlantis, Klosterberg 13 (www.atlan-tis.ch). More known as "Tis" and the most famous in Basel, live music nights and a lot of dances, with an entry of 15 francs.
Babalabar, Gerbergasse 4. Club downtown, different tracks and many celebrities. Between 10 and 15 francs.
Bird's Eye, Kohlenberg 20 (www.jsb.ch). Jazz live all weekends, and DJ Jazz rest of the day. Very popular. 15 francs.
Hirscheneck, Lindenberg 23. Grunge, hardcore, metal and ska in this coffee-bar.
Kaserne, Klybeckstrasse 1b. Aimed at night Kleinbasel, the coffee-bar presents live bands, DJ, lectures and meetings. Between 10 and 15 francs.
Parterre, Klybeckstrasse 1b (www.eye.ch/schlappe). Folk trio and a jazz what days during the week.
